Anxiety Recovery
Anxiety can be incredibly difficult to deal with. It is often referred to as "the silent struggle" or "an invisible illness" because it can be deeply distressing yet not outwardly visible to others.
Anxiety doesn’t always present as panic - often it just feels like you’re not yourself.
It’s easy to picture anxiety as something obvious: a racing heart, sweating, panic attacks that come out of nowhere. These intense symptoms can be clear indicators of anxiety, but anxiety can also be quiet. Slower. Harder to spot - especially in yourself.
You might be meeting all your responsibilities, staying productive, getting praise at work and admiration from others but inside you may feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and like you are always failing in some way – leaving you swimming in a sea of worry and dread.
It might manifest as constant overthinking, intrusive thoughts that interrupt your day, or an inability to concentrate no matter how hard you try. You may have trouble sleeping and you are always feeling restless or on edge, like you're waiting for something bad to happen - even when you can’t say what.
It can mean pulling away from people or things you used to love because you have lost your confidence to do things you once did with ease. You might feel overwhelmed by small decisions, or like your brain won’t stop buzzing - a loop of “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios that won’t quiet down.
It can feel like exhaustion without reason. Numbness instead of nervousness. A constant sense that you’re not quite you.
All this can change
Over the past 15 years, I’ve helped many clients overcome anxiety, and one of the most striking patterns I’ve consistently observed is this:
Once anxiety has been present for a prolonged period, it becomes increasingly difficult for people to recognise it!
Clarity and insight is the first step towards recovery
Not knowing can feel so uncomfortable and makes us go round in circles in our minds wondering what is going on with us. Gaining some clarity and insight can be such a relief because then we know what we are dealing with and how best to proceed.
If you are wondering whether anxiety might be at the root of your difficulties, then download my free guide and use the anxiety questionnaire to see whether anxiety is shaping your experience.
It’s not there to give a diagnosis. It’s a way to check in with yourself and get clarity on whether anxiety might be the hidden underlying cause of your struggles.
Recovery
Over the past 15 years I have gained extensive experience helping clients overcome anxiety. Accompanying people on their incredible journeys has shown me that recovery isn’t quick but totally possible.
It tends to follow these four steps, which I call the RISE Recovery Process (Realise, Ignite, Shed and Embrace).
- REALISE: The first step towards recovery is always to fully REALISE what is going on. This means getting clarity on what has caused your anxiety condition and to fully understand the direct links between the trigger, the raised adrenalin and cortisol levels in your body, your physical, mental and emotional symptoms as well as the accompanying anxiety “loops” this has set up in your system. This realisation then paves the way for a full understanding of what needs to be “undone”.
- IGNITE: The second step is to IGNITE the true YOU underneath the anxiety condition. You haven’t been feeling yourself because you haven’t been yourself. Anxiety; being in survival mode, gets us away from our Self because when we are in fight or flight mode, we are not ourselves. Reconnecting with your actual Self, inviting it to step forward, letting it rise, is key in the recovery process.
- SHED: The third step is to SHED what the anxiety condition has “created”. Anxiety builds in layers and each layer triggers new thought systems and feeling states fuelled by increasing levels of adrenalin and cortisol. They are like software that installs itself in the psyche as a result of being in survival mode for a prolonged period of time. As the anxiety subsides, some symptoms drop away by themselves; others need to be “unlearnt” and “uninstalled”.
- EMBRACE: The fourth step on the recovery journey is to EMBRACE the confident, self assured and empowered YOU! It involves making a fresh start, leaving the past fully behind and stepping into your vibrant, healthy, confident future you!
